Equality PAC Statement on the New York Democratic Primary Wins By Ritchie Torres in NY-15 and Mondaire Jones in NY-17: “WE LOVE NEW YORK” Torres set to make history as the first openly gay Black Latino Member of Congress. Jones positioned to make history as the first openly gay Black Member of Congress.

Washington, DC – Equality PAC, the campaign and political arm of the Congressional LGBTQ Caucus, celebrates yesterday’s Democratic primary victories of Ritchie Torres in New York’s 15th Congressional District and Mondaire Jones in New York’s 17th Congressional District.

Both Torres and Jones will advance to their respective general elections in November as the overwhelming favorites to win and to make LGBTQ history.

Equality PAC Co-Chairs and Congressmen David Cicilline and Mark Takano issued the following statement on Ritchie and Mondaire’s victories:

Yesterday, voters in the Bronx rejected the agenda and hate speech of a Trump-sympathizer and close friend of Ted Cruz, and instead cast their ballot for Ritchie Torres – a son of the Bronx and a true pragmatic, progressive leader who has spent his life fighting for his neighbors and his community,” said Cicilline. “Bronx voters know Ritchie and they know he has delivered for his community time and time again… and they have put their faith and trust in him to take that fight to Congress.”

Democratic voters in New York’s Westchester and Rockland counties made history yesterday by choosing to send Mondaire Jones to represent them in Washington,” said Takano. “Raised by a single mom in Section 8 housing and on food stamps, Mondaire has always been a fighter for the vulnerable and most in need, and he understands that we need more champions for working class people in Congress. He will be a strong advocate for his district and an important and much-needed voice.”

Ritchie’s and Mondaire’s victories are a reflection of Equality PAC’s commitment to expand the Equality Caucus in Congress with diverse and strong progressive voices. Today, we celebrate their hard-fought and well-deserved wins, not only for them and for their districts – but for the LGBTQ community and for our country. Tomorrow, we get back to work.

Yesterday was a huge, historic boost to our efforts to elect a record number of LGBTQ Americans to Congress this November who will stand with Joe Biden in the ongoing fight for equality and as we continue to seek a more perfect union. Equality PAC is dedicated to bringing nearer the full legal and societal equality of LGBTQ people and creating a federal legislative environment conducive to that goal. All funds raised into Equality PAC are spent supporting and electing openly LGBTQ individuals and strong LGBTQ allies to the United States Congress who are committed to ensuring full civil rights and protections for all LGBTQ individuals.
