Washington, DC – Today, Equality PAC Co-Chairs Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) and Chairman Mark Takano (D-CA) announced the endorsement of local businessman and political and community advocate Robert Zimmerman for New York’s 3rd Congressional District. Zimmerman is running to succeed Rep. Tom Suozzi, who is retiring to run for governor of New York. Holding this seat will be critical as we fight to defend our fragile Democratic House Majority in the 2022 midterms.
“Robert Zimmerman has been a powerful advocate for Democratic causes, both in his community and at the national level,” said Equality PAC Co-Chair Congressman David Cicilline. “He has the experience, knowledge of the issues, and commitment to speaking up for the most vulnerable among us to effectively serve the people of New York’s 3rd District and our nation. I am proud to endorse him and look forward to working together in Congress to pass the Equality Act and deliver results for our communities on issues from investing in infrastructure to protecting our environment.”
“It is clear from Robert Zimmerman’s record, credentials, and broad coalition of support that he is both the best candidate to represent New York’s 3rd District and the strongest candidate for the Democratic nomination,” said Equality PAC Co-Chair Chairman Mark Takano. “Robert has spent his career advocating for those in our communities who are unseen and unheard, and I know that he will carry these values as the next Representative for New York’s 3rd District. I am proud to endorse his campaign and look forward to serving together.”
“I am honored and proud to receive the endorsement of Equality PAC, and the support of Co-Chairs Representative David Cicilline and Chairman Mark Takano, who have been leaders in advancing LGBTQ+ rights in Congress,” said Robert Zimmerman. “We are living in an era where bias crimes and acts of violence against the LGBTQ+ community are rising yearly, and anti-trans legislation is being advanced by state legislatures across our country at unprecedented speed. In Congress, I will be dedicated to fighting back against bigotry whenever it occurs, supporting the Equality Act, and protecting our rights and dignity as the first openly LGBTQ+ Member of Congress from Long Island and Queens.”
Robert Zimmerman is a businessman and political advocate from Long Island. Growing up as a closeted gay kid in the suburbs, Robert struggled to find his voice, and was driven to a career in political activism to speak up for others who were unseen and unheard. He’s spent his career fighting for social, environmental, and economic justice, both in his Long Island community and as a national Democratic leader.
Robert began his career as a Congressional staffer and advisor for then-Rep. Lester Wolff and later Reps. James Scheuer and Gary Ackerman. From Capitol Hill, Robert’s career took him to the TV networks, where he’s served as an on-air advocate for Democratic causes and stood up to right wing talking points on issues ranging from reproductive rights to gun violence prevention, to the climate crisis. As a Democratic National Committee member, Robert has worked to reform our politics by opposing corporate money in campaigns and working to dismantle the DNC’s superdelegate system. Robert has built his business, ZE Creative Communications, now in its 33rd year, in the same community in which he was raised and still resides. He is a product of Great Neck Public Schools, graduated cum laude from Brandeis University, and received his MBA from Fordham University.
Equality PAC is the political arm of the Congressional LGBTQ Equality Caucus and is dedicated to the full legal and societal equality for LGBTQ Americans. All funds raised into Equality PAC are spent supporting and electing openly LGBTQ individuals and strong LGBTQ allies to the United States Congress who are committed to passing the Equality ACT and to ensuring full civil rights and protections for all LGBTQ Americans.
