Equality PAC Statement on the Historic Confirmation of Dr. Rachel Levine to be Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services

Washington, DC – Today, Equality PAC Co-Chairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-CA) and Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) released the following statement on the Senate’s historic confirmation of Dr. Rachel Levine to serve as the next Assistant Secretary of Health and Human Services.

“Dr. Levine’s nomination represents a historic first for the transgender community in the United States,” said Equality PAC Co-Chairs Chairman Mark Takano and Congressman David Cicilline. “Through all the transphobic attacks and bigotry that Dr. Levine endured during her confirmation process, she persevered, and the work and her determination paid off. We want to extend our enthusiastic congratulations to Dr. Levine on this amazing achievement and we thank President Biden for his decision to appoint Dr. Levine to this important post. As we continue to battle the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we could not think of a better, more capable person to help lead the Department of Health and Human Services.”

Dr. Levine is the first-ever transgender official to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate and is the nation’s highest ranking transgender presidential appointee. Previously, Dr. Levine served as the Secretary of Health for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
