Equality PAC Announces Endorsement of Local Meteorologist Eric Sorensen for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District

Washington, DC – Today, Equality PAC Co-Chairs Chairman Mark Takano (D-CA) and Congressman David Cicilline (D-RI) announced the endorsement of local meteorologist Eric Sorensen for Illinois’ 17th Congressional District. Sorensen is running to succeed Congresswoman Cheri Bustos, who is retiring at the end of the 117th Congress.

“Eric Sorensen has spent his career earning the trust of people in Central and Northwest Illinois by telling the truth and keeping his communities safe,” said Equality PAC Co-Chair Congressman David Cicilline. “Eric will continue to serve Illinoisians by informing people with facts and science, protecting the rights of all people, and communicating the challenges faced by those in his communities. I am excited to endorse Eric’s candidacy and look forward to working together in Congress to pass the Equality Act and deliver results for our working families, like lowering the costs of prescription drugs and addressing climate change.”

“For twenty years, the people of Central and Northwest Illinois welcomed Eric Sorensen into their homes as their trusted meteorologist,” said Equality PAC Co-Chair Chairman Mark Takano. “His decades working in the community, experience as a science communicator, and broad base of support shows that he is the right candidate to represent Illinois’ 17th District and the strongest Democrat to hold this important seat. I am proud to endorse Eric’s campaign and look forward to serving together.”

“I am honored to receive the endorsement of Equality PAC, and the support of Co-Chairs Representative David Cicilline and Chairman Mark Takano, who have been champions in advancing LGBTQ rights and representation in Congress,” said Eric Sorensen. “In my two decades as a meteorologist, my goal was always to keep our communities safe. I will continue that work as a member of Congress, including fighting back against bigotry and discrimination that is directed at our LGBTQ community. And I am excited to break the rainbow ceiling as Illinois’ first openly LGBTQ member of Congress.”

Eric Sorensen is a meteorologist born and raised in Rockford, IL running for U.S. Congress. He spent 11 years delivering the weather at WREX in Rockford and 7 years at WQAD in the Quad Cities. He’s seen firsthand the importance of establishing trust with the community, and he’s determined to use his expertise as a climate communicator to fight for Illinoisans on environmental justice and more in Washington.
